ABOUT SHERLOCK HOLMES
IN BRENTWOOD
Sherlock Holmes in Brentwood is a live play reading series that is produced by Bonnie MacBird at the Contrapuntal Performance Hall in Brentwood. Previous readings have included an introduction by noted Sherlockian Leslie S. Klinger, author of the authoritative New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, and feature music especially written for the series by award-winning composer Ryan Johnson(Watson, Stoneface, HitRECord Fall Formal). The first season included readings of Conan Doyle’s rarely seen original adaptation of his own story The Speckled Band. Future productions will include Jeremy Paul’s acclaimed The Secret of Sherlock Holmes and a musical Sherlock Holmes evening. Other readings are in the planning stages – we aim to surprise and delight you with a variety of Sherlockian experiences.
FUTURE PRODUCTIONS
The Secret of Sherlock Holmes
By Jeremy Paul
Commissioned by actor Jeremy Brett, who had already won huge acclaim playing Sherlock Holmes in the popular Granada television series, this 1988 play starred Brett and his television Watson, Edward Hardwicke, in a run of several hundred performances at the Wyndham Theatre in London’s West End. A psychological mystery that explores (as the title implies) the innermost secrets of Sherlock Holmes himself, this intriguing play delves into Holmes’ and Watson’s first meeting (with plenty of witty badinage) and subsequent partnership, Watson’s marriage, Holmes’ disappearance at Reichenbach, and the real (and somewhat shocking!) relationship between Holmes and Moriarty. The play debuted on September 22, 1988 and drew Brett and Hardwicke fans from around the world to enjoy their favorites holding forth on the live stage. Said playwright Paul in his notes, “Many of the words you will hear are Conan Doyle’s own, taken on and fashioned into an original mystery which I hope will intrigue Conan Doyle himself if he’s looking in.”
